Founder’s Story: Where the story starts

From Industrial Motors to Everyday Garments: Bringing Magnetism Closer to People

For over two decades, Ruiyao Xu worked at the forefront of China’s rare-earth permanent magnet industry. Widely recognized in the technical and industrial community as the educator behind “Rare Earth Magnet Sister” (稀土磁姐), her engineering expertise powered electric vehicle drive trains, consumer electronics modules, and precision industrial automation. In those domains, magnetism had a single objective: to make heavy machinery run faster, stronger, and more efficiently.

Then, an unexpected personal event changed the question entirely.

In 2021, following surgery, Ruiyao found herself facing a long period of bed rest and physical recovery. Overnight, tasks that normally took seconds became frustrating obstacles: lifting an arm to zip a jacket, aligning tiny buttonholes with weakened fingers, or pulling a collar closed. Everyday dressing, once automatic, now required outside help.

Lying in a hospital bed, the material engineer experienced a profound realization:

“For twenty years, I have engineered magnets to empower multi-ton vehicles and high-speed motors. If this technology can move machines, why can’t it help a human being perform the most basic, vulnerable actions of daily life?”

“What if magnetism was no longer rigid, cold, and heavy—but soft, flexible, and human?”

Determined to find the answer, Ruiyao redirected her deep knowledge of rare-earth metallurgy toward textiles. In 2021, she founded MAGTECH.

Bringing industrial magnetics into soft goods required tearing down conventional engineering boundaries. Industrial magnets were hard, brittle, and unyielding; garments, by contrast, are soft, fluid, and meant to flex with the human body.

Ruiyao assembled a cross-disciplinary collective: rare-earth material scientists, magnetic circuit engineers, and mold specialists working side-by-side with fashion patternmakers, textile artisans, and sample machinists. Together, they developed proprietary flexible magnetic composites that bend, fold, wash, and conceal within fabric seams.
